Shop Opening Hours

General Shop Opening Hours, Public Holidays and 24/7 Stores in Hungary

In Hungary, shop opening hours are relatively flexible, but there are general habits and legal frameworks worth knowing. Most stores open on weekdays between about 7:00–10:00 a.m. and close around 6:00–8:00 p.m., although this varies depending on the type of shop.

Smaller grocery stores and local convenience shops often open earlier and close later, while clothing stores and other retail units typically operate between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. Shopping malls also follow their own, usually longer, opening hours (for example 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., Sundays 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.), but these differ by company.

Sunday Opening Hours

Since legal changes in 2015, Sunday opening is not mandatory for all shops in Hungary. Larger stores are subject to certain commercial restrictions, while some smaller shops (under 200 m², where the owners themselves work) may open on Sundays. In practice, however, many grocery stores, shopping malls, and service providers are open on Sundays as well, especially in larger cities.

Public Holidays

Most shops in Hungary are closed on public holidays. On these days, the majority of retail stores, supermarkets, drugstores, and similar businesses do not open, or only offer very limited services. Hungary’s official national and public holidays include:

  • New Year’s Day (January 1)

  • March 15

  • May 1

  • August 20

  • October 23

  • November 1

  • Christmas (December 25–26)

  • Movable holidays such as Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Whit Monday

On these days, most shops are closed, so it is advisable to shop in advance.

24/7 and Special Opening Stores

There are exceptions and special cases. So-called non-stop or 24/7 shops (such as certain convenience stores or shops at petrol stations) typically operate around the clock. These are most commonly found in larger cities or near major transport hubs.

Even on public holidays, you can usually find some small convenience stores, petrol station shops, as well as on-duty pharmacies and hospitality venues (such as restaurants and cafés), which are not subject to the same strict closure rules.
