Job Seeker’s Allowance (formerly unemployment benefit)

As a foreigner you are entitled to job seekers allowance if you are an EEA national, have a refugee, beneficiary of subsidiary protection status or long term residency (settled, immigrated).

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must:

  • Be a registered job seeker,
  • Have worked at least 360 days within the past three years,
  • Actively seek work but find no suitable employment on their own or through state employment services.

Application Process:
Applications can be made at the local employment office (based on residency) and require prior job seeker registration. Methods to apply include:

  • In person at the employment office,
  • Online via the e-Papír service or the Electronic Administration portal.

Required Documents:
Applicants need to provide documents such as proof of employment, social insurance card, bank account details, and employer-issued certificates. Those returning from work abroad must submit an EU-standard U1 form.

Allowance Duration and Amount:

  • Duration: The maximum payment period is 90 days, calculated as one day of benefit for every ten days of previous employment.
  • Amount: The daily allowance is 60% of the benefit base, capped at the minimum wage.
    • The minimum wage is 266,800 HUF monthly or 8,893 HUF daily (as of Dec 2023).

Lump Sum Option:
Recipients who secure a job with a minimum of four hours per day before the allowance period ends can request a lump-sum payment of 80% of the remaining amount.

Health Coverage:
Recipients are also eligible for health insurance benefits during the allowance period.
