What to know about pension in Hungary
Nyugdíj
(Pension)
In Hungary,
the pension system provides regular financial support to elderly people who
have worked and paid social security contributions (called “TB”) during their
careers. This monthly payment is called nyugdíj.
To be
eligible, you usually need:
·
to be at
least 65 years old,
·
and to have
worked and paid TB for at least 15 years.
The amount
of pension you receive depends on how many years you worked and how much you
earned. If you worked in another country, Hungary may count that time toward
your pension if there is an agreement between the two countries (e.g. within
the EU).
The pension
is not granted automatically; you need to apply for it and submit the required
documents for the application.
You can
apply for your pension at the local government office (or district office) or
at the Budapest Capital Government Office if you live in Budapest.
You may also
be eligible for rokkantsági nyugdíj (disability pension) if you are
under retirement age but unable to work due to a long-term illness or
disability. This type of pension is available to those who:
·
have paid
social security contributions for several years,
·
have a
significant health condition certified by a medical review board,
·
and are no
longer able to earn income from work.
This support
is usually assessed through a complex application process, including medical
examinations. If you're unsure about eligibility, ask a social worker or
contact the local district office.
