The Családi pótlék is a monthly state subsidy in Hungary designed to help families cover the costs of raising and educating children. While the amount of the benefit has remained relatively stable over the years, it is considered a key “gateway” benefit—eligibility for Családi pótlék often unlocks access to other tax breaks and family-related allowances.
Eligibility for Családi pótlék depends on your residency status and
work permit, as well as your relationship to the child.
EEA Citizens: If you are an EU/EEA citizen working in
Hungary with a registered address card (Lakcímkártya), you are
generally eligible for the benefit.
Third-Country Nationals: You can usually apply if you hold
a single permit (összevont engedély) for work that is valid
for at least 6 months, or an intra-corporate transfer permit
valid for at least 9 months.
The “Same Household” Rule: The child must live with you in
the same household in Hungary and be a minor—under 18, or up
to 20 if still in secondary education.
School Attendance: For children over age 3, they must be
enrolled in a Hungarian kindergarten or school. Excessive
unexcused absences (typically 20+ hours per year) may lead to suspension of the
benefit.
This allowance provides vital financial support to families and ensures
children have access to education and basic needs while living in Hungary.
2. Monthly Amounts (2026)
The Családi
pótlék provides a fixed monthly allowance, which varies depending on the number
of children, whether the parent is single, and if the child has a chronic
illness or disability. The 2026 amounts are as follows:
|
Family Status |
Amount per Child (Monthly) |
|
1 child |
12,200 HUF |
|
1 child
(Single Parent) |
13,700 HUF |
|
2 children |
13,300 HUF
per child |
|
2 children
(Single Parent) |
14,800 HUF
per child |
|
3 or more
children |
16,000 HUF
per child |
|
3+
children (Single Parent) |
17,000 HUF
per child |
|
Child with
chronic illness/disability |
23,300 –
25,900 HUF |
These
amounts are paid monthly and are intended to help cover everyday costs such as
food, clothing, school supplies, and other child-related expenses. For single
parents, the allowance is higher to provide additional support for raising
children on one income. Children with chronic illnesses or disabilities receive
a significantly higher amount to address extra care needs.
Even though the Családi pótlék amount—such as 12,200 HUF
for one child—may seem modest, applying is essential because
it often serves as a gateway to other important benefits. Most notably,
eligibility for Családi pótlék allows parents to access the Family Tax
Benefit (Családi adókedvezmény), which can significantly reduce
monthly income tax.
In 2026, the Family Tax Benefit amounts are:
·
1 child: 20,000 HUF tax savings
per month
·
2 children: 80,000 HUF tax
savings per month (total)
·
3 or more children: 66,000 HUF
tax savings per child per month
By applying for the allowance, families can unlock these larger financial
benefits, which can make a meaningful difference in household income.
