Cost of utlities and common charges

The average price for utilities varies based on your usage when you rent a place where bills are not included in the rent.

Utilities

The average monthly cost of utilities is approximately between HUF 20000 and HUF 60000 based on several factors (size of apartment, how efficient the heating and electric facilities are, number of people in the apartment, etc.).

Utility prices are determined by usage in a two-pillar system. The price of gas and electricity is lower per unit as long as your usage stays below the national average. The price of electricity is HUF 36 up to 2,523 kWh/year, and HUF 70.10/kWh above this. “Night electricity” is HUF 23.1 for a kWh up to the consumption limit, above which you have to pay HUF 62.9 per kWh. Gas is HUF 102/m3 up to 1729 cubic meters, i.e. up to 144 cubic meters/month, and HUF 747/m3 after that.

It is common to pay by a flat-rate system, that the same amount is paid every month no matter of consumption and after the yearly meter dictation there is a reimbursement or additional payment is needed based on the real consumption. It is also possible to dictate the real consumption and pay according based on the meter monthly.

In case you are renting a flat it is usually your landlords' responsibility to dictate the meter. The official site for elexctricity and gas consumption is: mvmnext.hu

Tips to reduce utility costs:

  • There are many devices in our apartments that are unused and go unnoticed in the background in standby mode. These can be, for example, TVs, screens, dishwashers, coffee machines. Unplugging or turning off these devices can certainly save us a lot of money and energy in the long run. Also, unplug chargers and power plugs when not in use. Turn off the lights when you leave the room and reduce the number of light sources. To heat food, use the stove or microwave instead of the oven. Boil water in a kettle. Also, put only as much water into the kettle as you really need. Someone who only half-loads the washing machine uses the same amount of energy as other who fill it completely. Also, those who wash at 30 degrees instead of 60 will only use a third amount of electricity. Hang and dry them outdoors or indoors on a clothes dryer.

Common charges
Common charges are monthly fees you pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the building. This can include amenities, staff, and building maintenance. Items that may be included: staff salaries, parking, trash and recycling pickup, storage rooms, … There is a difference between the buildings. You can ask the common representative in your building about the prices and what’s included
