Local Markets

Local markets are good places to get to know more about the country and food.

Great Market Hall

The Great Market Hall in the city centre is a busy tourist attraction. The market is open from Monday to Saturday and it’s located on Vámház körút 1-3. It was built in 1897, it is the most beautiful with a Zsolnay Roof and largest of all Budapest market halls. It is the most touristy market in Budapest, it is possible to buy all kind of souvenirs Foodwise on the top floor it’s possible to taste traditional Hungarian food, however it is expensive and often only made for tourists (like putting all kind of strange ingredients to Lángos.


Market at Rákóczi Square


After Fővám tér, the Rákóczi tér hall was the second to be built in the series of Budapest markets. You can buy cheese, fish, meat, vegetables, pickles, but you can also taste grandma's street food. In the neighborhood around there are cool cafés and bars such as Csiga Café and Hintaló as well as an African Restaurants. There are also other local markets in the city, like Gozsdu Weekend Market (Király street), Market on Hunyadi square (Hunyadi square), Market in Fény street, Lehel Market (Lehel square), Fehárvár úti market, Bosnyák téri market and so on. 


Farmer Markets

Farmer markets are usually open one day (Saturday or Sunday). Czakó Piac, Pancs Gasztroplacc, Szimpla Háztáji Piac are some quite expensive options in Budapest. Around Budapest in Nagymaros (50 mins by train from Budapest) you can find a cheap and local farmers’ market every Saturday. 

Flee markets

There are also some cool flea markets in Budapest such as the Ecseri flea market that is open every day and is quite so it’s more for tourists but interesting to visit ones to see antic things. The Budai Zsibvásár is located in Budaörs and open on every Saturday in Budaörs and the Bakancsos Piac is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 


Shopping streets

If you are looking for a shopping street in Budapest, Váci street and Andrássy street are the best known. However they are also tourist attractions, Andrássy street has rather luxurious offers. 

Groceries

For groceries you have multiple variations, like Aldi, Lidl, Spar, Interspar, Tesco, … They often offer discount cards, you can ask the cashier about them.
