Children reaching age 6 until 31 August become compulsory school-age on 1 September of the same year.
Primary schools last for 4/6 or 8 grades.
After completing basic school, students may continue their studies in an upper-secondary school:
- upper secondary general schools
- upper secondary vocational schools (usually specialised in arts)
- vocational schools
- technicums
- special vocational schools
The entrance examinations to upper-secondary schools are centrally organised.
On this link: https://kir2korzet3h.kir.hu/Pub/index you can find which school is assigned to you based on your address. However, there is a free choice of school for parents, so you have the right to contact any school you wish, but they might not be able to accept your child.
The registration period for public primary schools in Hungary is April 1 to April 30. Parents can choose to register their child in a school in their home district or elsewhere, however, if the out-of-home-district school cannot accommodate the child, then the parents have five days to enroll their child in a local district school. When selecting a school, parents often attend "open days" to meet teachers, observe lessons, and ask questions..
