Hungarian is one of the most unique—and famously challenging—languages in Europe. The good news is, you don’t need to be fluent to make a positive impression. Learning a few essential words and phrases can open doors, earn smiles, and make daily life much easier.
If you learn nothing else, start with these:
·
Szia! (See-ya) – Hello / Hi /
Goodbye. A versatile greeting used in casual settings. For groups, say Sziasztok!
·
Köszönöm! (Kuh-suh-num) – Thank
you. For extra politeness, say Köszönöm szépen! (Thank you
very much).
·
Igen / Nem (Ee-gen / Nem) – Yes
/ No.
·
Bocsánat! (Bo-cha-nat) – Sorry
/ Excuse me. Useful when bumping into someone or getting a waiter’s attention.
These short sentences are handy in shops, cafes, and everyday encounters:
·
Jó napot! (Yo nah-pot) – Good
day. A more formal “hello” for shops or offices.
·
Kérek egy… (Kay-rek edj…) – I
would like a… (e.g., Kérek egy kávét – I’d like a
coffee).
·
Mennyibe kerül? (Men-nyee-beh keh-ruyl?)
– How much does it cost?
·
Beszél angolul? (Beh-say-l an-go-lul?)
– Do you speak English?
·
Nem értem. (Nem ayr-tem) – I
don’t understand.
·
Egészségedre! (Ag-esh-shay-ged-reh)
– Cheers! Also used to say “Bless you” when someone sneezes.
Hungarian distinguishes strictly between friendly and formal speech:
·
Friendly (Te): Use Szia
with friends, children, or peers in casual settings.
·
Formal (Ön): Use Jó
napot (Good day) and Viszontlátásra (Goodbye) with
elders, teachers, or in official contexts such as the Immigration
Office or banks.
