When you feel ill, you should contact your General Practitioner (=GP or “family doctor”) in Hungary. They are familiar with a variety of symptoms, and they can suggest treatment or send you to see a specialist. They can also send you on sick leave.
To have a GP you need social security coverage
Who can be your GP?
- you can decide who you trust: you can ask around for recommendations, contact the doctors on your own – but in the end, it’s their choice whether they are willing to accept you as a patient or not.
-you can start with the doctor of the area where you live: they are obliged to accept you if you belong to their are.
But how do you find your GP?
-The easiest is to ask your neighbors or check whether there is a bulletin board in your house about the GP in your area.
-the official way is to go to the website of your local municipality: these websites all look different, and are sometimes only available in Hungarian, because they are maintained by the different municipalities. Each district is further divided into areas so you can search which exact area you belong to.
To ease your search there is a very good list of how to find your GP in each district that you can find here: https://helpers.hu/residence-permit/how-to-find-your-gp-in-hungary/
Healthcare for children
Children must be provided all types of care necessary for their good health. These criteria include GP Pediatrician care, children out- and inpatient services, health-visitor and school physician services, as well as compulsory vaccinations and other conditions and factors necessary for a healthy lifestyle, such as a healthy diet.
However, you need to have a valid TAJ card or health insurance for all these options. You can find more information about TAJ here: …
